SUMMARY:Jesse Jones Jr. Jazz Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Jazz is alive in South Florida and Jesse Jones Jr. is here to prove it! The Miami native is a saxophonist extraordinaire and continues to be on the forefront of a burgeoning jazz renaissance in South Florida. Jones and his brother\, Melton Mustafa\, who is one of the great trumpet players of our time\, have been a running force in music for many years. \nAs a child\, Jones would listen to a neighbor practice his saxophone while playing along with Cannonball Adderly albums. “I loved that sound and knew right then I was going to be a musician for the rest of my life.” Jones went on to attend Mississippi Valley State University where he excelled in music. After college\, he joined the military and became a member of the US Navy Show Band. Jones traveled throughout North and South America\, and had the opportunity to develop his showmanship skills. Besides playing the sax\, clarinet and flute on tour\, Jones sang\, tap-danced and performed comedy skits. After serving his four year military term\, Jones moved to Boston before returning home to Miami\, where he signed with Fantasy Records in 1996. \nSunday\, January 14th\, 2024 \n3:30 pm – 5:30 pm \nJazz Age Stage at Lummus Park and 12th Street

SUMMARY:LeNard Rutledge & Mike Cady present "Cole Porter and Friends"
DESCRIPTION:Captivating\, soul-stirring\, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the sound of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami\, Florida\, LeNard was always surrounded by different musical genres. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from classical\, jazz\, hymns\, and funk\, like that of James Brown. In the fall of 1986\, LeNard sang the ballad “Teach Me Tonight” at St Augustine’s College’s Annual Spring Concert. \nHis confidence grew as he sang more songs\, which led to other projects such as studio work and voice-over jobs. For fear of letting his drumming chops falter\, LeNard played at clubs to keep the rust away. A musical friend (Rick Best) introduced him to songwriting. In October 1997\, LeNard auditioned as a vocalist for the Melton Mustafa Orchestra. He was the featured vocalist until 2003. \nLeNard has performed at many jazz spots in South Florida. The Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Van Dyke Café\, and O’Hara’s Jazz Pub are the most notable. LeNard has shared the stage with several highly respectable jazz musicians such as Nnenna Freelon\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Kenny Drew Jr.\, and Harry Allen. In May of 2006\, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST by the Miami New Times magazine. His first CD\, Hello World\, was released that year. \nCome watch LeNard LIVE on Saturday\, January 13\, 2023 \n4:00 pm – 6:00 pm \nJazz Age Stage at Lummus Park & 12th st. \n

SUMMARY:Troy Anderson and the Hot Five
DESCRIPTION:Troy Anderson got his first taste for music while growing up in a Bahamian family filled with musicians. At the age of 10\, he began playing the trumpet and went on to perform in the Florida Sunshine Band and the Gospel Sounds before being introduced to the world of the drum and bugle corps in school. A later stint with the Florida Vanguards taught him how to be an effective lead soprano soloist while performing in front of thousands of screaming fans. Subsequent tours with the famous Bayonne Bridgemen Drum & Bugle Corps helped hone his showmanship skills. \nAnderson first fell in love with the music of Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong while playing with the 2nd AD (Fwd) Jazz Band in Germany where he was stationed as a paratrooper. Following one such performance for some high-ranking officials\, the Command Sergeant Major of the U.S Army asked Anderson to put together a show of nothing but Armstrong’s greatest hits. Anderson was known throughout Germany for playing like Satchmo\, but singing like him was a different story. Practice\, however\, made perfect and he soon managed to replicate Armstrong’s trademark growl with stirring accuracy. \nAfter a horrific accident sidelined Anderson’s career as a musician — he was told by doctors he would never be able to play trumpet again — he miraculously recovered to form the Wonderful World Tribute Band with the guidance of South Florida’s Gold Coast Jazz Society Series” Who was Louis Armstrong” teaching elements of Jazz to elementary students through which he’s brought the legendary music of Louis Armstrong to life. Anderson and his ( U.S) Wonderful World Band has made a significant mark of New Orleans flare to the South Florida area and is currently residing in Germany and touring the E.U with his Wonderful World Trio which is based out of Budapest Hungary. Anderson’s Armstrong is too natural to be called uncanny. Starting out with the look\, he slips easily into the rest— the dinner jacket\, the trumpet and hanky\, the roly-poly voice\, and above all\, the contagious the joie de vivre that made Armstrong so beloved. \n\nDon’t miss the mini swing dance lessons and entertainment between band sets!
