SUMMARY:Lesson: Collegiate Shag & Balboa Taster with Minn Vo & Karolina Chrapkova
DESCRIPTION:Get a taster of Collegiate Shag and Balboa steps with International Champions Minn Vo & Karolina Chrapkova!\nNo partner required!\nABOUT YOUR TEACHERS \n\n\n\n \nMINN VO \n\n\n \nKAROLINA CHRAPKOVA \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DANCE STYLES\nCollegiate Shag (or “Shag”) is a partner dance done primarily to uptempo swing and pre-swing jazz music (185-250+ beats per minute). It belongs to the swing family of American vernacular dances that arose in the 1920s and 30s. It is believed that the dance originated within the African American community of the Carolinas in the 1920s\, later spreading across the United States during the 1930s. The shag is still danced today by swing dance enthusiasts worldwide.\n[Defenition pulled from Wikipedia] \nBalboa\, also known as “Bal” is a swing dance that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and enjoyed huge popularity during the 1930s and 1940s. An 8-count danced in closed position\, the earliest form (often called “Pure Balboa”) evolved in the mostly conservative dance halls of southern California where space was limited and strict codes of conduct were enforced. These dance halls usually prohibited the wild kicks of the Charleston and Lindy Hop. Pure Balboa is characterized by an upright posture with partners standing chest to chest. Step variations generally play with the rhythm or look and feel (style) from below the knee downwards and deal with changes in direction. Balboa is frequently danced to fast jazz (usually anything from 180 to 320 BPM)\, though many like a slower (170-190 BPM) tempo. While most dancers differentiate between pure Balboa and Bal-Swing\, both are considered to be a part of the dance. Bal-Swing evolved from Balboa when original Balboa dancers experimented with fancier variations of the dance which forced the chest to chest connection to be broken. In this form of Balboa a variety of spins\, turns\, dips\, tricks\, and even air steps are introduced.\n[Defenition pulled from Wikipedia] \n\n* In addition to this class\, don’t miss the mini-lessons and entertainment between jazz band breaks! \n\nThe lesson will be held at the Jazz Age Stage on Lummus Park & 12th Street from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

SUMMARY:Movie Lover's Guide to South Beach
DESCRIPTION:Miami Beach is a favorite locale for on-location shooting of films and TV series. While most of the stories are fictitious\, the process of on-location shooting captures a record of a place as it was at a particular point in time. We witness all the elements that comprise a neighborhood; its buildings\, its people\, the noise\, even the level of automobile traffic. We will reconstruct the history of Art Deco and the City of Miami Beach by presenting short movie clips and frame freezes from films to illustrate the ever-changing nature of Miami Beach\, its buildings\, and its people. “Movie magic” will be dissected with a demonstration of a hard-to-see internal joke and impossible location movements not readily visible to the casual observer. \nAbout the Guide \nJoel Levine is Board Chair of the Miami Design Preservation League. Prior to retiring from a career in medical and educational administration\, he collected and restored radios and televisions from the Art Deco and Mid Century Modern periods (1925-1970). Joel uses unconventional sources\, including movie clips and picture postcards to tell a story about a place and its people. He has presented in Miami Beach\, Tel Aviv\, Mauritius\, and Napier\, New Zealand.

SUMMARY:Lesson: Beginner Swing with 4 x World Champions Nathalie & Yuval
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic dance steps of Swing/Lindy Hop with 4 x World Champions Nathalie Gomes Adams and Yuval Hod!\nNo partner required!\nABOUT YOUR TEACHERS \n\n\n\n \nNATHALIE GOMES ADAMS \n\n \nYUVAL HOD \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DANCE\n \nLindy Hop is an American dance born in the African-American communities of Harlem\, New York City\, in 1928 and has evolved since then. It was very popular during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Lindy is a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz\, tap\, breakaway\, and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. \nIn its development\, the Lindy Hop combined elements of both partnered and solo dancing by using the movements and improvisation of African-American dances along with the formal eight-count structure of European partner dances – most clearly illustrated in the Lindy’s defining move\, the swingout. In this step’s open position\, each dancer is generally connected hand-to-hand; in its closed position\, leads and follows are connected as though in an embrace on one side and holding hands on the other. \nThere was renewed interest in the dance in the 1980s from American\, Swedish\, and British dancers and the Lindy Hop is now represented by dancers and loosely affiliated grass-roots organizations in North America\, South America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Oceania. \nLindy Hop today is danced as a social dance\, as a competitive dance\, as a performance dance\, and in classes\, workshops\, and camps. Partners may dance alone or together\, with improvisation a central part of social dancing and many performance and competition pieces. \nLindy Hop is sometimes referred to as a street dance\, referring to its improvisational and social nature. In 1932\, twelve-year-old Norma Miller did the Lindy Hop outside the Savoy Ballroom with her friends for tips. In 1935\, 15\,000 people danced on Bradhurst Avenue for the second of a dance series held by the Parks Department. Between 147th and 148th street\, Harlem “threw itself into the Lindy Hop with abandon” as Sugar Hill residents watched from the bluffs along Edgecombe Avenue.\n[Defenition pulled from Wikipedia] \nPut a swing in your step during Art Deco Weekend! \n \n\n* In addition to this class\, don’t miss the mini-lessons and entertainment between jazz band breaks! \n\nGet ready before the weekend— watch ADW’s 2021 online dance classes for free! \n\nThe lesson will be held at the Jazz Age Stage on Lummus Park & 12th Street from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

SUMMARY:The Florida House\, 1945-1965
DESCRIPTION:Often one story tall and built of concrete block—with a large screened-in porch\, Florida room (more commonly known today as a sunroom)\, louvered windows\, and carport—the Florida House became a popular vernacular form in South Florida after the Second World War. Not simply the result of builders copying designs by known architects like Igor Polevitzky and Paul Rudolph on the cheap\, the idea of the Florida House was cultivated by builders and developers hoping to lure northerners to the Sunshine State. Using colorful promotional materials and archival evidence\, scholar Anna Andrzejewski explores how these efforts were so successful that within a generation\, both coasts of South Florida were transformed into a sprawling suburban landscape. \nOrganized with Miami Design Preservation League and presented as part of Art Deco Weekend. \nFree | Register

SUMMARY:Deco Deep Dive
DESCRIPTION:The Wolfsonian–FIU is a treasure trove of materials from the period 1850–1950\, gathered from near and far. From the “frozen fountain” that once served as the facade of the Norris Theater in Pennsylvania to a Miami River bridge tender’s house\, many of the architectural features in the building have been repurposed to serve a new function. In this lecture\, Wolfsonian curator Lea Nickless will delve into the stories of these design elements (and collection objects) found in and around 1001 Washington Avenue—where did they come from\, and how did they end up in Miami Beach? \nOrganized with Miami Design Preservation League and presented as part of Art Deco Weekend. \nFree | Register

SUMMARY:Miami's Secret Floating Village
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by people he met while working on the Christo Surrounded Islands project\, David Bricker found himself living aboard chasing stories here in Miami\, throughout the Bahamas\, and across the Atlantic. Realizing that he was living in a storybook\, he wrote about and photographed his adventures. Not only is this talk historically surprising and interesting\, it reveals an important truth—that adventure can be had in real life and not just in books and movies. \nAbout the Speaker \nDave Bricker is a resident of Coral Gables and has an MFA in Visual Communications. Bricker taught at the Art Institute in Miami for 15 years. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and corporate events\, including National Speakers Association events. He offers training programs in storytelling for leaders and teams. He is an award-winning professional speaker and author of 13 books who spent many years living aboard sailboats in Miami’s Dinner Key Anchorage. That anchorage\, “the secret floating village\,” is located a quarter-mile from Miami City Hall.

SUMMARY:Radio Waves: Miami Beach and the Golden Age of Radio
DESCRIPTION:Today Miami Beach is one of the most “broadcasted” locations in the world\, but 100 years ago the age of broadcasting was just becoming a reality. \nThis exhibition explores the first consumer mass media device and how it helped promote and shape Miami Beach’s early development. As radio proliferated through the first half of the twentieth century\, Miami Beach also transformed from an untamed barrier island into a famous tourism and cultural destination. \nRadio quickly became the “rage” in the mid-1920s as more and more Americans realized that owning a radio meant news\, entertainment\, weather\, and politics could be transmitted wirelessly to them from the comfort of their homes. The radio brought families together to listen to broadcasts in their living rooms\, connecting people to faraway places and signaling the start of the machine age. \nMiami Beach’s pioneers recognized that promotion was vital to its success. They broke the mold by adding radio stations to their hotels\, broadcasting a message from this city carved from a jungle. \nRadio styles were dynamic\, often reflecting American culture and industrial design. Movies\, architecture\, automobiles\, and the 1939 World’s Fair were a few such examples. The materials from which radio chassis were made such as wood\, resins\, plastics\, metals\, and mirrored glass\, provided an endless array of aesthetically pleasing choices – many of which are highlighted in this exhibit. \nRadio Waves explores the Golden Age of Radio beginning in the 1920s to the late 1950s\, as manifested by the distinctive architecture of Miami Beach. Art Deco\, Streamline\, and Mid-Century Modern hotels and apartments houses designed by some of America’s foremost architects continue to welcome guests to the sun\, sand\, and sea of the City of Miami Beach. \nMiami-Dade Residents: Free Admission; General Ticket: $7 \nAt the Art Deco Museum  \n1001 Ocean Drive \nOpen Daily 9 am – 5 pm  \nhappening now\, through February 15\, 2024
