SUMMARY:Radio Waves: Miami Beach and the Golden Age of Radio
DESCRIPTION:Today Miami Beach is one of the most “broadcasted” locations in the world\, but 100 years ago the age of broadcasting was just becoming a reality. \nThis exhibition explores the first consumer mass media device and how it helped promote and shape Miami Beach’s early development. As radio proliferated through the first half of the twentieth century\, Miami Beach also transformed from an untamed barrier island into a famous tourism and cultural destination. \nRadio quickly became the “rage” in the mid-1920s as more and more Americans realized that owning a radio meant news\, entertainment\, weather\, and politics could be transmitted wirelessly to them from the comfort of their homes. The radio brought families together to listen to broadcasts in their living rooms\, connecting people to faraway places and signaling the start of the machine age. \nMiami Beach’s own pioneers recognized that promotion was vital to its success. They broke the mold by adding radio stations to their hotels\, broadcasting a message from this city carved from a jungle. \nRadio styles were dynamic\, often reflecting American culture and industrial design. Movies\, architecture\, automobiles\, and the 1939 World’s Fair were a few such examples. The materials from which radio chassis were made such as wood\, resins\, plastics\, metals\, and mirrored glass\,  provided an  endless array of aesthetically pleasing choices – many which are highlighted in this exhibit. \nRadio Waves explores the Golden Age of Radio beginning in the 1920s to the late 1950s\, as manifested by the distinctive architecture of Miami Beach. Art Deco\, Streamline\, and Mid-Century Modern hotels and apartments houses designed by some of America’s foremost architects continue to welcome guests to the sun\, sand\, and sea of the City of Miami Beach. \nMiami-Dade Residents: Free Admission; General Ticket: $5.

SUMMARY:Anna in the Tropics - 20th Anniversary Production
DESCRIPTION:The promo code is ANNA15 – 15% off\, active 1/13 – 1/15 when purchasing your tickets online.\nA stunning and evocative Pulitzer-Prize winning drama by Nilo Cruz.\n\nIt’s 1929 and we are in Florida at a Cuban–American cigar factory; cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are hired to educate and entertain the workers. When a new lector enters the scene and begins to read aloud Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina\, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners and suddenly the lives of the workers begin to parallel the novel. Old traditions and new ways collide while longing\, love\, and betrayal spark a volatile flame that signals the end of an era.\n\n\n\nWhy Anna in the Tropics?\nAnna in the Tropics is a story that belongs to this city. It was written by a Miami playwright\, it first premiered at the New Theater in Coral Gables\, it was awarded a Pulitzer\, and now\, for the first time ever\, Nilo Cruz himself will direct the play. Nilo and his achievements bring a huge sense of pride to our community\, and we are honored to continue collaborating with him and call him a dear friend. Anna in the Tropics is a beautiful balance of a strong story with poetic storytelling that is moving\, sexy\, heartbreaking and spectacular. – Michel Hausmann\, Artistic Director. \n  \n\nPurchase your ticket directly at Miami New Drama’s website. The promo code is ANNA15 – 15% off\, active 1/13 – 1/15 when purchasing your tickets online. https://miaminewdrama.org/show/anna-in-the-tropics/

SUMMARY:Opening Night Soirée with The Cab Calloway Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT – The show is sold out but may be enjoyed from Ocean Drive or Lummus Park adjacent to 12th street without a required ticket.\nDress dapper at VIP Night for MDPL Members— featuring The Cab Calloway Orchestra\, swing dance performances\, mini dance lessons\, and more!\nGet ready for a high-energy\, joyous\, and soulful performance ignited with audience participation! The Cab Calloway Orchestra\, directed by Cab’s first-born grandson\, “The Prince of Hi De Ho\,” C. Calloway Brooks\, comes from the Big Band Swing Jazz Orchestra style that came bursting out of the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom in the Harlem Renaissance during the golden age of radio in the 1930s and 1940s. \nGrowing directly out of the Louis Armstrong New Orleans Dixieland tradition\, Cab Calloway and his Orchestras virtually wrote the book on the “Hot Swing” sound and the “Jump” genre\, including a featured progressive approach to performance.  \nEvery day Brooks carries on the tradition of American big band music. The Cab Calloway Orchestra’s goal under C. Calloway Brooks is to expand the recognition and appreciation of its unique sound and sensibility while maintaining the integrity of Cab’s amazing musical repertoire. They want to make sure that you “keep that Hi-De-Ho in your soul!”

SUMMARY:Deborah Desilets: Spotlight on Art in Public Places
DESCRIPTION:In the 1930s art and national symbolism converged within the Federal Arts Projects\, or the WPA Projects\, that supported the values of the American Public. The great Depression and these Arts Projects changed the relationship between art and the public and are the harbinger of the relationships of art in the public realm today. Federal Arts Projects aimed to express American civic pride; today there are challenges to those very arts works as values in the public have changed greatly. \nThis lecture addresses Morris Lapidus’s life-long battle for ornamentation in architecture. The intention is to look at the ornaments\, their symbolism\, and the lasting quality of the messages in his art pieces for public consumption in his early hotels on Miami Beach\, and his lasting contribution to the art experience on Lincoln Road. \nDeborah Desilets is a registered architect\, curator of the Morris Lapidus Exhibition\, and steward of the Morris Lapidus archives.

SUMMARY:Sketchwalk #3: Tudor Hotel and Miami Beach Patrol Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:Sketch with us at the Miami Beach Art Deco Historic District to capture the essence of the 1920s Era and the Now into your sketchbook! \nMeeting point is in front of the Art Deco Museum and Welcome Center. Join us as our sketchwalk guide Ana takes us to The Tudor Hotel (1001-1099\, Collins Ave\, Miami Beach\, FL 33139) and the Miami Beach Patrol Headquarters (1001 Ocean Dr\, Miami Beach\, FL 33139). \nThe Tudor building features a tall spire with red squares; the exterior and interior contain a variety of Key Stone Coral tones. It almost looks like an antique radio. The Miami Beach Patrol building is considered as “Nautical Deco”\, in which buildings were designed to look like ocean liner lounge ships with porthole-style windows\, etc. \nPeople of all ages\, and all drawing levels and skills are welcome. A Sketchwalk is an interactive walking tour run by Urban Sketcher leaders\, where its participants stop to pull out their sketchbooks and capture the scene in a drawing. These on location from observation sketches tell the story of place\, time\, and community. \nAs this event is OUTDOORS be prepared with drinking water\, portable chair/stool\, and appropriate clothes for the weather. This event is FREE.

SUMMARY:Aerial Vision at the Wolfsonian-FIU
DESCRIPTION:November 19\, 2021–April 24\, 2022\nThe Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue \nAerial Vision explores how early 20th-century inventions—airplanes and skyscrapers\, each considered the embodiment of human achievement and a harbinger of a better tomorrow—sparked an era of remarkable creativity and new systems of seeing the world. Met with awe and excitement\, both technologies introduced novel approaches for living\, working\, and traveling and opened up previously inaccessible vertical perspectives to modern spectators\, from artists and designers to urban planners and everyday office workers. This exhibition of paintings\, posters\, furniture\, and more draws from the Wolfsonian collection to examine these heightened positions of power and privilege\, revealing connections between newly available viewpoints and their impact on the artistic imagination. \nAerial Vision is made possible by Bradesco BAC Florida Bank and the Arthur F. & Alice E. Adams Charitable Foundation. \nThe Wolfsonian-FIU admission is free for Florida residents. Ticket and visiting information may be viewed on their website: click here. \nFree Fridays\, 6–9pm every week \nRegular Hours\nWednesday–Sunday: 10am–6pm (Friday 9pm)
