SUMMARY:Radio Waves: Miami Beach and the Golden Age of Radio
DESCRIPTION:Today Miami Beach is one of the most “broadcasted” locations in the world\, but 100 years ago the age of broadcasting was just becoming a reality. \nThis exhibition explores the first consumer mass media device and how it helped promote and shape Miami Beach’s early development. As radio proliferated through the first half of the twentieth century\, Miami Beach also transformed from an untamed barrier island into a famous tourism and cultural destination. \nRadio quickly became the “rage” in the mid-1920s as more and more Americans realized that owning a radio meant news\, entertainment\, weather\, and politics could be transmitted wirelessly to them from the comfort of their homes. The radio brought families together to listen to broadcasts in their living rooms\, connecting people to faraway places and signaling the start of the machine age. \nMiami Beach’s pioneers recognized that promotion was vital to its success. They broke the mold by adding radio stations to their hotels\, broadcasting a message from this city carved from a jungle. \nRadio styles were dynamic\, often reflecting American culture and industrial design. Movies\, architecture\, automobiles\, and the 1939 World’s Fair were a few such examples. The materials from which radio chassis were made such as wood\, resins\, plastics\, metals\, and mirrored glass\, provided an endless array of aesthetically pleasing choices – many of which are highlighted in this exhibit. \nRadio Waves explores the Golden Age of Radio beginning in the 1920s to the late 1950s\, as manifested by the distinctive architecture of Miami Beach. Art Deco\, Streamline\, and Mid-Century Modern hotels and apartments houses designed by some of America’s foremost architects continue to welcome guests to the sun\, sand\, and sea of the City of Miami Beach. \nMiami-Dade Residents: Free Admission; General Ticket: $7 \nAt the Art Deco Museum  \n1001 Ocean Drive \nOpen Daily 9 am – 5 pm  \nhappening now\, through February 15\, 2024

SUMMARY:Saving Special Places and Building Better Communities: Smart Growth in Florida
DESCRIPTION:For more than half a century\, Florida has relied on growth and sprawling development to fuel its economy. Sadly\, we continue to experience the tragic consequences of this approach\, which has been likened by some to a “Ponzi scheme.” Today\, Florida continues to face the consequences of rapidly growing population coupled with the looming threats of sea level rise and intensifying climate events. 1000 Friends of Florida has served as a state growth management “watchdog” organization since the 1980s and continues today to educate and empower citizens in the community planning process. \nOur latest project\, Sea Level 2040/2070\, examines population growth and sea level rise trends\, and demonstrates how the conservation of more land\, the protection of our historic and cultural resources in our legacy downtown communities\, and by encouraging smarter growth and development we can safeguard our quality of life for generations to come. \nAbout the Speaker \nSince January 2020\, Haley Busch has worked for 1000 Friends of Florida to promote sustainable growth through collaboration with civic and conservation organizations statewide. She works to connect a new generation of Floridians with 1000 Friends’ mission and assists in planning local workshops and other outreach events statewide. Prior to working for 1000 Friends\, Haley was the Administrator for the Florida Conservation Coalition where she helped conservation leaders build consensus on policy solutions to Florida’s pressing environmental challenges. A Gainesville native\, Haley graduated from Eckerd College\, Phi Beta Kappa\, and obtained her master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Florida. Haley resides in St. Petersburg where she enjoys kayaking\, birdwatching and cycling Pinellas County’s trails and greenways.

DESCRIPTION:Anibal Berraute presents a Milonga Under the Stars. Enjoy a night of Tango Fusion with special dance performances.\nThe program is led by Berraute\, an Argentinean piano player\, composer\, arranger\, and producer\, that fuses the tango with elements of other musical forms. \nThe fusion includes the “Uruguayan candombe” with its African roots and Argentinean rhythms\, traditional country folklore sounds\, and American jazz among others\, creating a new vibrant harmonic approach to a genre. In a little over a century\, this genre transcended its humble beginnings to reach the whole world\, and its concert halls to be finally declared “cultural patrimony of humanity” by the United Nations. \nDon’t miss the live tango performances!

SUMMARY:Islandia: The Miami Beach That Wasn't
DESCRIPTION:In 1962\, property owners incorporated The City of Islandia into Dade County. Encompassing 33 islands in Biscayne Bay\, Islandia had a population in the single digits. Property owners lobbied for multiple different causeways from Mainland South Florida to their island community. They platted subdivisions. Everything seemed to be on track for major development of these “Pearl Islands” as Ralph Munroe called them. But then\, the Federal Government decided to create Biscayne National Park instead. What can we learn from this rare tale of environmental success in South Florida? Jason Katz\, publisher of Islandia Journal\, will tell you all about it. \nJason Katz is the publisher of Islandia Journal\, a (sub)tropical periodical of regional myth\, folklore\, history\, and ecology. He is a contributing editor to Burnaway Magazine. Jason was born and raised in Miami.
