DESCRIPTION:Get a Taster of Collegiate Shag with International Dance Champions Nathalie Gomes Adams & Minn Vo!\nNo partner required!\nABOUT YOUR TEACHERS \n\n\n\n \nNATHALIE GOMES ADAMS \n\n \nMINN VO \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DANCE STYLES\nCollegiate Shag (or “Shag”) is a partner dance done primarily to uptempo swing and pre-swing jazz music (185-250+ beats per min) belonging to the swing family of American vernacular dances that arose in the 1920s and 30s. It is believed that the dance originated within the African American community of the Carolinas in the 1920s\, later spreading across the United States during the 1930s. \n \n“Shag” itself (when used in reference to American social dances) is a very broad term used to denote a number dances that originated in the first half of the 20th century. Today\, the term “collegiate shag” is often used interchangeably with “shag” to refer to a particular style of dance that was popular amongst American youth during the swing era of the 1930s and 40s. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basic dance steps of Swing/Lindy Hop with 4 x World Champion Yuval Hod & Gypsy Juls!\nNo partner required!\nABOUT YOUR TEACHERS \n\n\n\n \nYUVAL HOD \n\n \nGYPSY JULS \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE DANCE\n \nLindy Hop is an American dance born in the African-American communities of Harlem\, New York City\, in 1928 and has evolved since then. It was very popular during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Lindy is a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz\, tap\, breakaway\, and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. \n \nIn its development\, the Lindy Hop combined elements of both partnered and solo dancing by using the movements and improvisation of African-American dances along with the formal eight-count structure of European partner dances – most clearly illustrated in the Lindy’s defining move\, the swingout. In this step’s open position\, each dancer is generally connected hand-to-hand; in its closed position\, leads and follows are connected as though in an embrace on one side and holding hands on the other. \nThere was renewed interest in the dance in the 1980s from American\, Swedish\, and British dancers and the Lindy Hop is now represented by dancers and loosely affiliated grass-roots organizations in North America\, South America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Oceania. \nLindy Hop today is danced as a social dance\, as a competitive dance\, as a performance dance\, and in classes\, workshops\, and camps. Partners may dance alone or together\, with improvisation a central part of social dancing and many performance and competition pieces. \nLindy Hop is sometimes referred to as a street dance\, referring to its improvisational and social nature. In 1932\, twelve-year-old Norma Miller did the Lindy Hop outside the Savoy Ballroom with her friends for tips. In 1935\, 15\,000 people danced on Bradhurst Avenue for the second of a dance series held by the Parks Department. A magical and musical experience with the beautiful voice of Rose and the genuine Brazilian acoustic guitar of Ramatis Moraes! \n \nRose Max is the great-grand daughter of the conductor Cupertino de Menezes and granddaughter of the guitar player Manuel de Menezes\, both legends of the early Brazilian music. She started singing professionally in the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio de Janeiro. Rose Max won 7 times the International Brazilian Press Award for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA”. DESCRIPTION:Jazz is alive in South Florida and Jesse Jones Jr. is here to prove it! The Miami native is a saxophonist extraordinaire and continues to be on the forefront of a burgeoning jazz renaissance in South Florida. Jones and his brother\, Melton Mustafa\, who is one of the great trumpet players of our time\, have been a running force in music for many years. \nAs a child\, Jones would listen to a neighbor practice his saxophone while playing along with Cannonball Adderly albums. “I loved that sound and knew right then I was going to be a musician for the rest of my life.” Jones went on to attend Mississippi Valley State University where he excelled in music. After college\, he joined the military and became a member of the US Navy Show Band. Jones traveled throughout North and South America\, and had the opportunity to develop his showmanship skills. Besides playing the sax\, clarinet and flute on tour\, Jones sang\, tap-danced and performed comedy skits. The ensemble and its students have been featured with the Sunrise Pops Big Band\, the World Performing Arts Center for the Live at Lynn series\, Jazz at Jacksons\, and WDNA. They were also the first jazz vocal ensemble to be invited to perform a concert for the FMEA Conference in 2019. \nThe award-winning FIU Panthonics was also the first student ensemble to perform at the Jazz Educators Network held this past January in Orlando. They also performed for the 2022 Pompano Jazz Festival opening for David Sanborn.

DESCRIPTION:Captivating\, soul-stirring\, earthy and funky. These are just some of the words used to describe the sound of LeNard Rutledge. Growing up in Miami\, Florida\, LeNard was always surrounded by different musical genres. His parents had an extensive music collection ranging from classical\, jazz\, hymns\, and funk\, like that of James Brown. In the fall of 1986\, LeNard sang the ballad “Teach Me Tonight” at St Augustine’s College’s Annual Spring Concert. \nHis confidence grew as he sang more songs\, which led to other projects such as studio work and voice-over jobs. For fear of letting his drumming chops falter\, LeNard played at clubs to keep the rust away. A musical friend (Rick Best) introduced him to songwriting. In October 1997\, LeNard auditioned as a vocalist for the Melton Mustafa Orchestra. He was the featured vocalist until 2003. \nLeNard has performed at many jazz spots in South Florida. The Museum of Contemporary Art\, the Van Dyke Café\, and O’Hara’s Jazz Pub are the most notable. LeNard has shared the stage with several highly respectable jazz musicians such as Nnenna Freelon\, Dee Dee Bridgewater\, Kenny Drew Jr.\, and Harry Allen. In May of 2006\, LeNard was named BEST JAZZ ARTIST by the Miami New Times magazine. It belongs to the swing family of American vernacular dances that arose in the 1920s and 30s. It is believed that the dance originated within the African American community of the Carolinas in the 1920s\, later spreading across the United States during the 1930s. The shag is still danced today by swing dance enthusiasts worldwide.\n[Defenition pulled from Wikipedia] \nBalboa\, also known as “Bal” is a swing dance that originated in Southern California during the 1920s and enjoyed huge popularity during the 1930s and 1940s. An 8-count danced in closed position\, the earliest form (often called “Pure Balboa”) evolved in the mostly conservative dance halls of southern California where space was limited and strict codes of conduct were enforced. These dance halls usually prohibited the wild kicks of the Charleston and Lindy Hop. Pure Balboa is characterized by an upright posture with partners standing chest to chest. Step variations generally play with the rhythm or look and feel (style) from below the knee downwards and deal with changes in direction. Balboa is frequently danced to fast jazz (usually anything from 180 to 320 BPM)\, though many like a slower (170-190 BPM) tempo. It was very popular during the swing era of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Lindy is a fusion of many dances that preceded it or were popular during its development but is mainly based on jazz\, tap\, breakaway\, and Charleston. It is frequently described as a jazz dance and is a member of the swing dance family. \nIn its development\, the Lindy Hop combined elements of both partnered and solo dancing by using the movements and improvisation of African-American dances along with the formal eight-count structure of European partner dances – most clearly illustrated in the Lindy’s defining move\, the swingout. In this step’s open position\, each dancer is generally connected hand-to-hand; in its closed position\, leads and follows are connected as though in an embrace on one side and holding hands on the other. \nThere was renewed interest in the dance in the 1980s from American\, Swedish\, and British dancers and the Lindy Hop is now represented by dancers and loosely affiliated grass-roots organizations in North America\, South America\, Europe\, Asia\, and Oceania. \nLindy Hop today is danced as a social dance\, as a competitive dance\, as a performance dance\, and in classes\, workshops\, and camps. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy live jazz by FIU students!\nThe FIU Art Deco Combo is directed by Dr. Lisanne Lyons and consists of vocalists and a rhythm section who perform a varied and challenging repertoire of jazz and jazz-influenced music\, as well as contemporary\, latin\, and  a cappella styles. The group emphasizes close harmonies\, improvisation\, cutting-edge repertoire\, and new works by students and FIU faculty. They also perform music from the library of Manhattan Transfer\, New York Voices\, Swingle Singers\, Groove for Thought\, and original arrangements written by some of the finest jazz arrangers in the country. The group is open for audition for all FIU music students and all vocal jazz principles and majors. \nIn July 2021 the group was honored with a Student Music Award from Downbeat Magazine\, widely recognized as the most prestigious publication in jazz education. \n \nAbout The Director \nLisanne Lyon’s career began immediately following high school as the featured vocalist for the Air Force Bands. During her years in the service she performed and traveled worldwide with the “Norad Command Band\, ”Travis AF “Band of the Golden Gate\,” and the U.S. Air Force Academy “Falconaires.” She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music and Doctorate in Music from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. As a student\, she received two Down Beat “Dee Bee” awards for Best Jazz Vocalist and one for Best Jazz Arrangement. She was also invited to be a featured performer with Joel Grey on the NBC televised Orange Bowl half-time show\, “You’ll Get a Kick Out of Cole.” Shortly after school\, Cy Coleman selected her to replace Monica Mancini in the national touring company of his Tony award winning “City of Angels.” \nDr. Lyons has performed with the Woody Herman Orchestra\, Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau\, Arturo Sandoval\, Larry Elgart\, University of Miami Concert Jazz Band\, Roanoke Symphony\, Palm Beach Pops\, Las Olas Studio Orchestra\, South Florida Jazz Orchestra\, Sunrise Pops Orchestra\, Sugar Pops Orchestra\, Grand Rapids Symphony\, Hallandale Pops Orchestra\, Ars Flores Orchestra\, Gene Krupa Orchestra with Michael Berkowitz\, XL Big Band in Sweden\, Harry James Orchestra\, Artie Shaw Orchestra\, and various bands across the country. She has also performed with many of the worlds top jazz artists such as Maria Schneider\, Bobby McFerrin\, Mark Murphy\, Four Freshmen\, Mose Allison\, Jon Hendricks\, Don Braden\, Paul Bollenbach\, Ted Rosenthal\, Ira Sullivan\, Duffy Jackson\, Jim Pugh\, Harold Jones\, Dave Berkman\, Eliane Elias\, Claudia Acuna\, Bucky Pizzerelli\, Gary Burton\, Dennis DiBlasio\, John Fedchock\, Walter White\, Kevin Mahagony\, and many others. Lisanne has recorded two solo CD’s\, “Right as the Rain\,” and “Smile\,” with the John Toomey trio. “Smile” was met with critical praise including the Washington Post and Cadence magazine. She is in demand as a performer\, adjudicator\, arranger\, and conductor. \nIn 2014\, she joined the FIU School of Music as head of Jazz Vocal Studies and Director of the newly formed Jazz Vocal Ensemble. She made her successful debut at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center on November 19\, 2014.

DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a high-energy\, joyous\, and soulful performance ignited with audience participation!\nThe Cab Calloway Orchestra\, directed by Cab’s first-born grandson\, “The Prince of Hi De Ho\,” C. Calloway Brooks\, comes from the Big Band Swing Jazz Orchestra style that came bursting out of the Cotton Club and Savoy Ballroom in the Harlem Renaissance during the golden age of radio in the 1930s and 1940s. \nGrowing directly out of the Louis Armstrong New Orleans Dixieland tradition\, Cab Calloway and his Orchestras virtually wrote the book on the “Hot Swing” sound and the “Jump” genre\, including a featured progressive approach to performance.  \nEvery day Brooks carries on the tradition of American big band music. The Cab Calloway Orchestra’s goal under C. Calloway Brooks is to expand the recognition and appreciation of its unique sound and sensibility while maintaining the integrity of Cab’s amazing musical repertoire. The program is led by Berraute\, an Argentinean piano player\, composer\, arranger\, and producer\, that fuses the tango with elements of other musical forms. \nThe fusion includes the “Uruguayan candombe” with its African roots and Argentinean rhythms\, traditional country folklore sounds\, and American jazz among others\, creating a new vibrant harmonic approach to a genre. In a little over a century\, this genre transcended its humble beginnings to reach the whole world\, and its concert halls to be finally declared “cultural patrimony of humanity” by the United Nations. \nDon’t miss the live tango performances!
